Over the past month and a half, Chris Gilbert has brought a new energy into Dominican using his unique and refreshing outlook on life. He encourages his students that as an artist, you must be confident in yourself and your abilities, seize opportunities when they’re presented, support your team, BE YOURSELF, and let go and just dance. Chris works at First Stage Children’s Theatre in the summer. As a past First Stage student, I know that Chris is the most genuine version of what First Stage has to offer. While he is, of course, a phenomenal dancer, he is also a fantastic teacher. At one of our first rehearsals, he told us that he does not yell and so far, he has successfully kept that promise. Every rehearsal with Chris proves to us again and again what a kind, loving, talented, patient, and supportive teacher he is.
I am not a dancer in the slightest, but Chris has taught me to have confidence in myself and to not over-think and relax when I’m dancing. I’ve seen this same effect on many other cast members throughout this process and continue to respect and admire him as a teacher in this light.
The philosophy Chris lives by and regularly preaches to the cast of Elevation stresses these five main points:
Everything happens for a reason.
Never let what other people think affect how you live your life. The only opinion that matters is your own.
Everyone deserves the chance to shine.
Confidence is key.
Everyone is an artist in their own way.
Elevation opens a week from Thursday –
May 3rd, 4th, and 5th at 7:00
