Kaws- Passing Through

Written by Christine Gill

Kaws is a contemporary American artist known for his toys and paintings. A big figurehead in street-wear culture Kaws’ work is highly sought after and always holds a certain value among those who know what it’s worth. Born Brian Donnelly in New Jersey, “Kaws” graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Starting first with graffiti art he then began working in advertising and soon gained both street credit and gallery exhibitions. He has worked with the likes of Nike and Uniqlo, and his signature style has graced many different works and collaborations. His most famous pieces, though, are his statues. Little, usually vinyl, figures that range from 8 to 12 inches and usually cost around 200-300 dollars. Their signature Xs for eyes has become a Kaws symbol renown around the world. He recently recreated his famous Passing Through statue in a slightly smaller form. It retailed at $200 and actually crashed his website, because so many people were trying to buy one. The love of his artwork and the dedication of both collectors and resellers are why he is one of the most popular contemporary artists in the modern street-wear fashion scene.
