Joaquin Phoenix On Discrimination in The Movie Industry

Written by Solo Harris

Joaquin Phoenix won the award for Best Actor last Sunday at the BAFTA awards. During his speech, he acknowledged the discrimination that the movie industry has. “I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you’re not welcome here.” He says that he is ashamed to be apart of the problem, and that he wants everyone to be acknowledged for their works. BAFTA’s chief executive, Amanda Berry, also was disappointed in the lack of diversity during the awards show. Joaquin Phoenix is not a talkative person, but it’s clear that he sees what is going on around him and is aware of the problem; the most important thing is that he spoke up about it.
