5 Fun Food Facts

Written by Sean Smith

Now that we’ve been at home for many weeks eating and snacking throughout the day, have you ever thought about your food? Some foods have interesting names, strange ingredients, or just a cool story behind them. Here are five of the more interesting food facts from “100 Fun Food Facts” to enjoy as you stay safe at home.

  1. The Most Expensive Pizza in the World

The most expensive pizza in the world is the Louis XIII from Salerno, Italy costing $12,000. The pizza for two is only 8 inches and takes 72 hours to make. The dough is made from organic Arabian flour and dusted with Australian sea salt. The pizza is topped with 3 types of caviar, buffalo mozzarella, 6 other assorted cheese, and lobster from Norway and Cilento. It is prepared at your home by three Italian chefs.

  1. Fruit Snacks

Who doesn’t like a sweet, chewy fruit snack every once in a while? Have you ever wondered why they are so shiny? Fruit snacks are coated with wax to give them that shine. The type of wax used is carnauba wax, the same type that’s used on cars. That’s something to think about the next time you eat a fruit snack.

  1. Skittles

America’s favorite flavor of Skittle is strawberry, the red one. The red color makes it so appetizing, but you might be surprised to learn what the dye is made of. The red dye, carminic acid, is made from the crushed bodies of a beetle called dactylopius coccus. “This acid is used in maraschino cherries, strawberry and raspberry flavored candy, and lipstick.” Scientists still debate if this red dye is as harmless as companies want us to believe.

  1. Fruit Loops Cereal

Whether you’re young or old, Fruit Loops is still a very popular cereal with people of all ages. Kellogg’s marketing has made people think that Fruit Loops will include lemon, lime, orange, grape, blueberry, and cherry flavors. This isn’t true at all. All Fruit Loops have the same fruit-blend flavor, and the cereal doesn’t contain any fruit at all. No one seems to mind as it is a top-selling cereal.

  1. Eggs

Eggs are good to eat when they’re cooked in a variety of ways, such as scrambled, over-easy, sunny-side-up, or even poached. Eggs are also used a lot when baking. They do expire, so how can you tell if they’re still good to use? “Fill a bowl with cold water and place your eggs in the bowl. If they sink to the bottom and lay flat on their sides, they’re very fresh. If they’re a few weeks old but still good to eat, they’ll stand on one end at the bottom of the bowl. If they float to the surface, they’re no longer fresh enough to eat.”

So the next time you’re at home enjoying a meal or snack, do a little research, and you might find a few interesting facts.
