Our beloved Sr. Carla Sonnenberg passed away on Mo

Our beloved Sr. Carla Sonnenberg passed away on Monday, September 21, 2020.
Sr. Carla professed her faith and became a Sinsinawa Dominican in 1957. She joined the Dominican High School community in 1983 and served as an administrative assistant, volunteer and cheerleader of Dominican for 27 years. Sr. Carla loved everyone and when in her presence, you were her absolute favorite. She was the “go-to” lady for teachers, parents and students and a phrase often used was, “If Sr. Carla can do it, so can we,” because no task was too difficult for her to accomplish.
Joan Moroder shared, “She genuinely loved people and listened to others with her whole heart. She also LOVED the Brewers and would always have their game on the radio at her desk.” In 1997, a scholarship fund was established in her honor to provide funding for students who, without financial assistance, would be unable to attend Dominican. Students are still benefitting from the Sr. Carla Scholarship Fund today. In 2010, Sr. Carla retired from Dominican High School and moved to the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters in Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. She was an amazing woman and a true inspiration to all of us. In hearing of her passing, Bill Crowley said it best, “Sr. Carla is right where she wants to be now.”

Providence did provide. Providence can provide. Providence will provide.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.

May Sr. Carla’s soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

For the first time this year we held an all school

For the first time this year we held an all school liturgy. We followed social distancing guidelines with one class participating in the auditorium and others watching via zoom in their classrooms. Thanks to Father Jordan and all who helped make it possible to celebrate mass today!

In the first of our uKnighted Speaker Series, today Dominican virtually welcomed Pastor James West, Director of The Repairers of the Breach, Milwaukee's only homeless daytime center. Pastor West spoke with students about the work Repairers does for the homeless population in Milwaukee, helping them to over the stigma, predjuices and injustices they face, and what they can do to help.

Following Pastor West's talk, students engaged in reflective exercises on their own experiences with the people who are struggling through homelessness, and how they can help this population in need.

Our theatre rehearsals are underway, social distancing style! Dominican’s two fall shows are “The Mousetrap” (Nov. 6-8) and “Girls in the Boat” (Oct. 2-4). The “Girls in the Boat” cast even had a rowing lesson from alumnae Nicole Hoffmann ‘19.

Ebony Lewis, social justice and mental health advo

Ebony Lewis, social justice and mental health advocate, and author of the book “Dear Black Boy: It’s OK to Cry” visited Dominican today to dialogue with our students about pursuing racial equality for the black community and the events of racial injustice in Kenosha. Ebony provided a safe space to talk with students individually, met with our Peace and Justice and Christian Life Callings classes this afternoon, and held a student community forum after school.

Ebony continues to be an incredible advocate and resource for Dominican as we navigate social justice issues and educating our students, faculty and staff. She hosted virtual forums for our alumni community and current students, is holding open conversations and diversity training for our faculty and staff all year, and will be available for students throughout the school year.

Ebony will also be hosting a second Diversity & Inclusion Town Hall meeting on Thursday, September 10 at 6:00 p.m. for our current families and students via Zoom. Topics discussed during this meeting will include plans Dominican has developed in regards to addressing social injustice, as well as a brainstorming session on ways to make Dominican more welcoming for all students and families.

Dominican will continue address the issues of social injustice with our student community and do all that we can to ensure our students feel safe, heard and empowered.
